Where did all the people who populated small, now dying or non-existent, towns originally come from? Did people talk about their emigration the way we talk about small towns drying up today?

In the novel "To Live", Nationalist Chinese soldiers are surrounded by Communist forces during the Chinese Civil War. Although they have plenty of rice, they start to starve due to a lack of firewood, and some soldiers resort to digging up wooden coffins for fuel. Is this based on reality?
